About

Hello and welcome to Lobsterboy, a showcase of my illustrative work. My name is David Petzold. I’m a freelance illustrator living in Sydney, Australia. You will find that a lot of my work centres around typography. I love hand type and I try to incorporate it into every project where possible. My creative process includes the use of pen and ink, acrylic paint, a scanner, a tablet and a laptop.

The blog section (the page you are currently on) is a showcase of drawings, sketches and personal projects I’m working on. In the portfolio section you will find commercial work from clients such as Lululemon.

The Sketchbook Project – Find Your Way Home

Really enjoyed creating this one. I love working with black ink and pen to make a bold, contrasting image.

succubus

The Sketchbook Project – The Succubus

If you’ve ever had the displeasure of meeting a succubus in your dreams you will know that this is what they look like.

Sketchbook-Fourteen

The Sketchbook Project – Fourteen

This is the last post in the Sketchbook series, well, actually the second last. I’ll be posting the whole book as some of the pages have changed and evolved since I last posted them. Fourteen 1996 – 2010. I’m guessing by now you know what this is about ;)

Uula-Jero-bike

The Sketchbook Project – Uula Jero Bike Detail

More pages from the sketchbook. Here’s one of my favourite subjects to draw, the bicycle.

Sketchbook-wanderings

The Sketchbook Project – Wanderings

The Australia shaped coat hanger car aerial. You don’t see these in the city, more of a country thing I guess. Or maybe I just haven’t been looking that hard. This week’s challenge is to see one in the flesh.

Sketchbook-Merry-Mice

The Sketchbook Project – Merry Mice

Trace was camping in the Flinders Ranges not long ago. She woke one morning to find a bucket full of drowned mice.

Sketchbook-About

The Sketchbook Project – About

I thought it would be appropriate to include an about page in the sketchbook. If on the off chance someone does pick it up I hope this gives them some insight and meaning behind the words and illustrations. But what are the chances? Out of the 5,000 books on display I doubt mine will ever be read, until I go and search it out myself of course :)

Sketchbook-collar

The Sketchbook Project – Collar

Another post from the Sketchbook

Sketchbook-Little-Shadow

The Sketchbook Project – Little Shadow

Well, I sent the book off this morning. Off to New York to live with the other 5,000 sketchbooks. I hope it makes the journey safely.

sketchbook-sorry

The Sketchbook Project – I’m Sorry

Words of sorrow and guilt from Tracey. I couldn’t think of anything to draw for this one and in any case I think the words speak for themselves.

sketchbook-weeping

The Sketchbook Project – Weeping

Another bicycle drawing.

Sketckbook-FoxyFoxy

The Sketchbook Project – Foxy Foxy

Some nice musings by Trace on driving through the Australian outback.

sketchbook-circle-of-fiends

The Sketchbook Project – Circle of Fiends

Evolution is a funny thing. This illustration didn’t start out looking anything like this. I like it when things take on a life of their own.

Jordi-Dilemma

The Jordi dilemma

We lost Jordi last year. She was an amazing dog who we miss very much. It was nice drawing this and giving it to Trace on Christmas morning and I must say a little emotional. Merry Christmas to all.

Edit: To give some context. We always laughed about which would win if Jordi had to choose. We kind of experimented on occasion. Chicken was the clear winner.

Leeanne-1970s-chopper

1970s chopper

I drew this ’70s chopper last year during the 365 challenge and now it’s being reborn as a christmas present. A bit of colour here, a bit of a tweak there and it’s ready to go. Drawings are the best presents.

sketchbook-family-tree

The Sketchbook Project – Circle of a family tree

I’m collaborating with my wife Tracey on this project. She is writing the short pieces and I’m trying my best to illustrate. Not sure I’ve succeeded at this point but there’s more to come.

sketchbook-disapear

The Sketchbook Project – Disappear Completely

another page from the Sketchbook. Spelling mistakes abound, but hey, it’s all part of the process.

sketchbook-paul-kelly

The Sketchbook Project – Ned Kelly country

I’m participating in the Sketchbook Project by the Art House Co-op. It’s a cool initiative to get people to draw, paint, scrap or whatever in a sketchbook. It then goes into the library and on display in New York. Pretty cool. Check out the details on their site.
