Recently, I worked on an oil rig monitoring mobile application that, for various reasons, never saw the light of day. This is my take on what the experience could have been like.
To create a contemporary iOS application that could monitor both on-shore and off-shore oil rigs, in real-time.
User data indicated that the industry is predominately dominated by men between the ages of 18-35 and 50+ and that the app would be used in outdoors in the sunlight. So my initial thoughts were around keeping the UI high contrast with large, easily accessible controls.
A landscape orientation was adopted to utilise screen space and the main sections were broken out into a side navigation with settings and alerts resting in the top bar, providing constant visibility.
